On a frigid Saturday morning, the International School of Berne High School volunteered at Gwaatmoos ProNatura nature preserve as part of our Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) program. Ben from Grade 11, Marianna, Anna, and Malin from Grade 12, Mr. Kelso, Mr. Loud, and alumnae Maddie helped build some habitats and fences.
Mr. Kelso shares that "we worked side by side with the other regular ProNatura volunteers from the Thun area to erect nearly 120 meters of fencing from wood cleared from the forest. The cold didn't matter. We kept warm from shifting all the wood and weaving it into hedgerows, which will both mark and protect the nature reserve's boundary and provide habitats for the wildlife in the area.
As CAS Coordinator, I am very proud of how our students get stuck in. They don't mind the dirt, and they chat happily with the other volunteers making good use of both their own languages and languages learned at school. I was especially happy when the students told me they would do this even without CAS because of the fun of the event and the good that it does."
