At the end of the 2022-23 school year, Teacher Kevin Smith successfully launched the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Programme at the International School of Berne. He shares, " we are thrilled to now offer our students the International Award programme. It gives our MYP and DP students unique opportunities to develop essential skills, earn recognition, and participate in challenging and rewarding experiences. We are fortunate to be in Switzerland, where we can undertake many outdoor adventures together."
In June 2023, students took their first practice hike with Mr. Smith to a mountain hut in the Alps. Here are some reflections from our participants in Grade 9:
After hiking for what felt like forever, we finally made it to the hut. We made lunch and dinner and played games with everyone there. It was a really fun experience, but I realised that hiking with heavy backpacks is not my thing, but everything else was great! - Sienna
The five hours of hiking all the way to the hut were very challenging. Everyone was excited to camp outside in the wilderness, but it suddenly rained, and we felt a bit sad for not being able to enjoy a campfire. We still had a fun rest of the day together, playing games indoors and reuniting outside of school to explore new adventures. - Akani
Even though the hike was challenging, we still had a great time with our friends on the peak. - Zhenya
The journey was a new experience for me, and although it was challenging for most of us, it was a very enjoyable experience. We also had a lot of time and opportunities to bond as a class. - Anna
It was a great experience for the group. We successfully arrived at the hut, which took us four to five hours, although the plan was to arrive at the top in around two hours. However, we could still collaborate and help each other within the group. It was very enjoyable for everyone who took part in the trip. - Takumi
