Meet ISBerne

Meet Ms. Ewa Kolakowska

At the International School of Berne (ISBerne), our teachers and staff bring a wealth of experiences, cultures, and perspectives to our community. Through our Meet ISBerne series, we invite families to get to know the people behind the learning through a series of informal Q&As that explore their journeys, interests, and educational philosophies.

We are delighted to introduce Ms. Ewa Kolakowska, our German teacher for the Emergent and Capable Programmes in Grades 2–10. Originally from Poland, she is passionate about language learning, cultural exchange, and helping students grow in confidence.

What inspired you to become a teacher? How did your journey lead to ISBerne?

I became a teacher because I enjoy teaching German and helping students develop their language skills. Seeing my students make progress and become more confident motivates me every day.

I am passionate about working with students from different countries and cultures, and it was this love of international education that eventually brought me to ISBerne.

What do you think makes ISBerne unique?

What makes ISBerne special to me is its warm and supportive community. The teachers are professional, open-minded, and genuinely care about their students, while the leadership and staff create a positve atmosphere where everyone feels valued.

Our students bring curiosity, enthusiasm, and a genuine desire to learn, which makes every day rewarding.

I also value the opportunity I have at ISBerne to develop and refine modern approaches to teaching the German language.

What impact do you hope to have on students?

As a German teacher, I hope to help students become confident communicators and show them how important the German language can be for their future.

I also want to teach them to respect one another, learn about different cultures, and appreciate the diversity of our international community.

I also believe that good teaching is not only about knowledge, but about inspiring curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning in students.

What interests or hobbies do you enjoy outside of school?

In my free time, I enjoy reading books, listening to music, going to the theatre, and travelling. I also like cycling as well as practising yoga and pilates.

Do you have a fun fact you would like to share?

A fun fact about me is that I live in Grenchen, which has its own small airport. I have had the opportunity to fly twice in a four-seater airplane, which was an unforgettable experience.

At ISBerne, we are grateful for educators like Ms. Kolakowska who bring enthusiasm, cultural understanding, and a genuine commitment to student growth. Through her teaching, students not only develop their German language skills but also gain an appreciation for the diverse cultures and perspectives that enrich our international community.
