No. Many students join ISBerne from other national or international schools and have never studied the International Baccalaureate® (IB) before. Our experienced teachers provide the guidance and support students need to settle into the Middle Years Programme with confidence, ensuring a smooth transition both academically and socially.

ISBerne welcomes both international and local Swiss families. Entry requirements vary by grade level and are subject to our Admissions Policy and the regulations of the Canton of Bern.

The Grade 10 Bridging Year is designed for students who would benefit from an additional year of academic progress and personal development after completing compulsory schooling in Switzerland. Taught entirely in English, the programme helps students strengthen their academic skills, build confidence, and explore their future options in a supportive international environment.

Depending on each student's goals and progress, they may go on to apprenticeships or vocational training programmes in Switzerland, continue their education within the Swiss system, enter into a Diploma Pathway at ISBerne, or move to another international school or programme. Throughout the year, students receive individual guidance to help them identify the pathway that best matches their strengths, interests, and ambitions.

At ISBerne, students benefit from an internationally recognised education taught entirely in English within a small, supportive learning environment. Our Middle Years Programme places equal emphasis on academic achievement, wellbeing, critical thinking, communication, and personal development.

For families seeking an international education, greater individual attention, or a pathway leading to the International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme (IBDP), ISBerne offers an excellent alternative to the traditional Swiss Gymnasium.

Many families are attracted to the opportunity for their child to study in English, earn internationally recognised qualifications, and keep a wide range of future options open. Our graduates pursue pathways that include Swiss and international universities, universities of applied sciences, apprenticeships, professional training programmes, gap years, and careers around the world.

ISBerne also offers greater flexibility for students joining in Grades 6-12, including those transferring from Swiss schools, international schools, or other educational systems. Our team works closely with each family to identify the pathway that best aligns with their child's goals and aspirations.

No. Many students join ISBerne from Swiss and international schools while they are still developing their English language skills.

As part of our admissions process, we assess each student's English level to determine the support they may need. Students who require additional help receive English as an Additional Language (EAL) support, enabling them to build confidence, strengthen their academic English, and fully participate in classroom learning.

EAL support is included in tuition fees and provided at no additional cost to families.

Students have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of extracurricular activities throughout the school year, including sports, music, drama, visual arts, leadership opportunities, service learning, and academic enrichment.

ISBerne is a proud member of the Swiss Group of International Schools (SGIS) sports league, giving middle school students the opportunity to represent the school in a variety of sporting tournaments throughout Switzerland. Through SGIS competitions, students develop teamwork, resilience, leadership, and sportsmanship as they compete against other international schools.

Students aged 14 and over can also participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, a globally recognised youth achievement programme offered in more than 130 countries and territories. As part of the programme, students undertake service projects, develop new skills, complete physical challenges, and take part in expeditions in the Swiss Alps while working towards their Bronze and Silver Awards.

Together, these experiences encourage students to discover new interests, build confidence, develop leadership skills, and form lasting friendships beyond the classroom.

Yes. Students may purchase freshly prepared meals from our school cafeteria or bring lunch from home. The cafeteria provides a convenient space for students to eat, socialise, and connect with friends and teachers during the school day.
