Middle School: Grades 6–10

Building a strong foundation for a lifetime

The International School of Berne (ISBerne) is a private day school in Gümligen near Bern for students ages 3–18. We are proud to be the only school in the Bern region offering the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP), delivered entirely in English.

The middle school years are a time of tremendous growth. As students become more independent, they build confidence, discover new interests, and begin making decisions that shape their futures. At ISBerne, we challenge students academically while placing equal importance on wellbeing, supportive relationships, and personal development.

Our experienced teachers know every student as an individual and create a welcoming environment where young people feel encouraged to take on new challenges, build meaningful friendships, and develop the knowledge, skills, and resilience they need to thrive in our Upper School, university, and beyond.

The International Baccalaureate® Middle Years Programme

Helping Students Reach Their PotentialThe International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11–16 and encourages them to become confident, curious, and reflective learners.

Rather than studying subjects in isolation, students make meaningful connections across subjects while applying their learning to real-world situations. They are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, solve problems, and develop the knowledge and skills they need for future success.

Through a broad and balanced curriculum taught entirely in English, students build strong academic foundations while discovering their interests, developing independence, and preparing for the International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme (IBDP) and beyond.

Subjects Studied in Grades 6–10

Students study a broad range of subjects throughout the Middle Years Programme, ensuring they develop knowledge and skills across languages, mathematics, sciences, humanities, the arts, design, physical education, and wellbeing.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Some of the most valuable learning happens beyond the classroom. Throughout the year, students take part in experiences that develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, and leadership while creating lasting memories with their classmates.

Ski and Skate Fridays

During the Winter season, students take part in our Ski and Skate Friday programme. Over a seven-week period, your child will go skiing or snowboarding in the Alps.  All students are taught by professional instructors at the world-famous Zweisimmen resort.

Service Learning

An integral part of Grades 6 to 10 and the culture at ISBerne is service learning.  All students are involved in age-appropriate activities, where they make connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they see happening in the outside world.

Outdoor Education

At the beginning of each academic year, your child will participate in an Outdoor Education trip to learn more about their classmates, Switzerland, and themselves over a week-long educational bonding experience. In addition, students can also participate in the Duke of Edinburgh International Awards Programme.
