We are proud to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), which emphasises holistic learning and inquiry-based education. Curriculum

At the International School of Berne, we are passionate about the International Baccalaureate® Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum, as it is a well-balanced, concept-based approach centring around our students. Our mission is to "Welcome and connect. Nurture and inspire. Challenge and prepare."

The Kindergarten curriculum is robust and diverse, responding to the varied ways that children at this age learn and grow. Children at this age have a growing sense of cause and effect. They use language to problem solve. They take responsibility for their own actions. They continue to practice group skills such as waiting for a turn or sharing space, time, and resources.

Throughout the year, Kindergarteners are learning to negotiate roles in social settings. They have a growing ability to concentrate and participate in group settings, such as meeting time, and they can follow multi-step directions. They have awareness of and beginning empathy for the feelings of others. They are beginning to use their knowledge of a variety of strategies in their writing and reading. Developing confidence and independence is a major developmental task in Kindergarten.

Our approach develops curious and intelligent individuals who are prepared to face future challenges, whether they continue their education with us or elsewhere in the world.

Units of Inquiry

In the International School of Berne's Kindergarten class, your child will explore one of six transdisciplinary themes known as "Units of Inquiry (UOI)." These units cover significant areas of knowledge, including: who we are, where we are in place and time, how we express ourselves, how the world works, how we organise ourselves, and sharing the planet.

It's worth noting that Kindergarten students will work alongside Grade 1 students as they study these units, promoting a collaborative learning environment for both students and teachers alike.

Language Learning

At ISBerne, our innovative programme of inquiry integrates language learning into a variety of engaging contexts, making it fun and interactive for your child. While English is the primary language of instruction, you can choose to have your child study German or French as a separate subject. Through immersive learning experiences, they will develop their speaking and listening skills, while also learning how to view and present information and master the art of reading and writing in these languages.

Our teachers will help your child develop the fundamental skills necessary for effective communication through writing. Your child will learn that writing is a way to record, remember, and share their thoughts and ideas with others. They will understand that writing involves using codes and symbols to convey meaning and that reading and writing share the same codes and symbols. Our programme will encourage your child to explore their creativity and imagination, and to express themselves through writing in both factual and imaginative contexts.

Our Kindergarten students learn that language can be represented visually through codes and symbols. Like curious detectives, they delight in exploring and recognising them in exciting new contexts.

We believe that reading is an essential tool for learning, and our programme helps your child become a skilled reader. They will understand that the clever combination of these codes conveys meaning and be eager to unlock the mysteries of new words and ideas. Your child will be well on their way to mastering this incredible skill.

Mathematics

In our Kindergarten curriculum, we focus on building a strong foundation in number sense and problem-solving skills. Your child will learn about the base 10 place value system and practice modelling, reading, writing, estimating, comparing, and ordering numbers up to hundreds or beyond.

They will also develop automatic recall of addition and subtraction facts and be able to describe their mental and written strategies using mathematical language. We introduce the concept of fractions as representations of whole-part relationships and provide real-life examples for learners to practice modelling and using fraction names. Our goal is to help your child build a strong mathematical foundation that will prepare them for success in their future studies.

Science

Our Science programme will encourage your child to develop their observational skills by using their senses to gather information and identify patterns. Through exploration, they'll gain an understanding of cause-and-effect relationships and how objects and phenomena function.

Our programme also emphasises the importance of recognising change over time, understanding how multiple variables can affect change, and respecting different perspectives and ways of organising the world. Your child will learn to show care and respect for themselves, other living things, and the environment.

Music

In the Kindergarten music class, our specialist Music Teacher will help your child explore music in all its forms, including various times, places, and cultures, developing a deeper appreciation for the art form. Through singing and playing different pieces, they will learn to keep a steady beat and experiment with sounds in composition tasks. They'll also be encouraged to express themselves musically by using elements like pitch and rhythm. Using notation, students will develop their musical ideas further.

Throughout the program, your child will develop an appreciation for music from different cultures and learn to describe and compare sounds using simple, appropriate musical vocabulary.

Visual Arts

In their Visual Arts lessons, Kindergarteners have the opportunity to develop their creativity and self-expression through various mediums, while also learning essential skills such as using different materials, problem-solving, and working independently. Our specialist Art teacher provides a supportive and motivating environment for students to explore their strengths and interests, which helps them develop self-esteem and confidence.

Physical Education (PE)

We offer a comprehensive Physical Education programme specifically designed for Kindergarten students. Your child will participate in movement classes with specialist teachers in our state-of-the-art Gymnasium twice a week. Students explore their body's capabilities while also learning how to solve simple problems and challenges through movement. Your child will also learn the importance of fair play, cooperative behaviour, and teamwork.

Our Kindergarten students participate in 'Ski and Skate Fridays' during the winter months for seven weeks. Each Friday, the class takes the tram to the ice rink at Wislepark in the nearby village of Worb. There, they enjoy ice skating lessons that focus on developing their stability, control, strength, and endurance.

School Day

Our school days are designed to be a rich learning experience where children are challenged and fulfilled in all ranges of the curriculum. It’s a full day of learning and fun!

Our classes run from Monday to Friday, starting at 8:30 and finishing at 15:30, except on Wednesdays when we finish at 14:30. But don't worry, learning doesn't stop there! Our students have the option to join our After School Activities (ASA) programme. This is a chance to try new things and participate in activities that aren't offered within the framework of our curriculum. We have something for everyone - from Band and Drama to Cub Scouts, Crafts, Lego Robotics, Dance, and so much more.

We understand that sometimes the workday for parents doesn't always align with school hours. That's why we offer the ISBerne After School Care programme, providing a safe and nurturing environment for your child from dismissal time until 18:00. So, whether your child is participating in our ASA programme or joining our After School Care, you can have peace of mind knowing that they are in good hands.

Early Learning & Kindergarten New Parent Preview & Tour

We warmly invite your family to join us for a special group tour of our Early Learning Centre and Kindergarten at the International School of Berne (ISBerne). Discover how our nurturing environment and world-class International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme can make a difference in your child's early years.

Led by our Primary Years Principal, Mr. Dowse, you'll explore our entire purpose-built campus, including visits to our Early Learning classrooms and Kindergarten facilities.
