Kindergarten: Ages 5-6

Learning In English and German
Our Kindergarten students enjoy a rich, inclusive, and stimulating play based learning environment, respecting all students and their unique learning styles. They develop curiosity and connections with each other, as they discover the world around them. Our strong focus on social and emotional care enables each student to feel a sense of belonging, acquire a love of learning, and to flourish at the International School of Berne (ISBerne).
Located just outside the city of Berne in Gümligen, ISBerne is a fully accredited and authorised private day school. Since 1961, we have welcomed families into our inclusive community and globally recognised educational programmes.
Starting in August 2025, our Kindergarten students will benefit from an enhanced, holistic learning experience. With permission from the Canton of Berne, we will now introduce Lehrplan 21 into ISBerne. From August 2025, our Kindergarten students will experience both English and German in their learning environment. Our International Pathway (IB PYP) English speaking Kindergarten teacher will teach alongside a new, locally trained, German speaking Lehrplan 21 teacher.
All Kindergarten students will learn together, in one classroom, to explore Units of Inquiry in both English and German. They will focus on either English or German for key language learning and Mathematics. They will combine to enjoy Music, Physical Education, and Visual Art in English. International Pathway students will learn German or French as an additional language. Lehrplan 21 students will learn French from Kindergarten onwards.
The learning and developmental goals are very much aligned for Kindergarten in the IB PYP and the Lehrplan 21 programme. This enables us to provide our Kindergarten students with an inclusive learning environment within which they will develop essential skills, enjoy cognitive growth, and acquire adaptability and confidence.
