The IB Bilingual Diploma

An international diploma recognising academic achievement in two languages
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Bilingual Diploma recognises students who complete the full IB Diploma Programme during Grades 11 and 12 (ages 16–18) while demonstrating advanced academic proficiency in two languages.
At the International School of Berne (ISBerne), many students earn the Bilingual Diploma through English and German studies, combining the advantages of an English-language education with continued academic development in German. Depending on their language profile and subject choices, students may also qualify through English and another Language A subject.
The International School of Berne (ISBerne) is a private, English-language day school in Gümligen near Bern for students ages 3–18. As the only International Baccalaureate® (IB) World School in the Bern region offering the IB Diploma Programme, we welcome both Swiss and international families and provide internationally recognised pathways that prepare students for success in Switzerland and around the world.
Recognised by universities in Switzerland and internationally, the IB Bilingual Diploma provides students with a strong foundation for future studies while highlighting the multilingual skills that are increasingly valued by universities and employers.

What Is the IB Bilingual Diploma?
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme is a challenging two-year programme for students in Grades 11 and 12 (ages 16–18). Students study six academic subjects while developing research, critical thinking, communication, and time-management skills that prepare them for university and life beyond school.
The IB Bilingual Diploma recognises students who successfully complete the full IB Diploma Programme while demonstrating advanced academic proficiency in two languages. At ISBerne, many students qualify through English and German studies, although students may also qualify through English and another Language A subject.
Students who successfully complete the programme graduate with both an IB Diploma and a U.S.-accredited High School Diploma.
Part of ISBerne's Four Diploma Pathways
The IB Bilingual Diploma is one of four diploma pathways available to students in Grades 11 and 12 at ISBerne.
We recognise that every student has different strengths, interests, language profiles, and future goals. For this reason, families can choose from several internationally recognised pathways, including:

- ISBerne High School Diploma Pathway
Our team works closely with each family to help identify the pathway that best supports their child's future plans.
How Do Students Earn the IB Bilingual Diploma?
To earn the IB Bilingual Diploma, students complete the full International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme during Grades 11 and 12 and meet the language requirements established by the International Baccalaureate Organization.
At ISBerne, students typically earn the Bilingual Diploma by successfully completing two Language A subjects and achieving the required examination results. Our team works closely with each student to determine whether the Bilingual Diploma is an appropriate option based on their language profile and academic goals.
Why Choose the IB Bilingual Diploma?
International University Recognition
The IB Diploma is recognised by universities in Switzerland and around the world. The Bilingual Diploma provides additional evidence of advanced academic proficiency in two languages, which can be valuable for university applications and future study opportunities.
Strong English and German Language Skills
Students continue developing advanced academic language skills while studying a rigorous curriculum in English. For many families, the Bilingual Diploma offers an opportunity to maintain and strengthen German while benefiting from an English-language education.
Greater Flexibility for Future Pathways
Graduates are well prepared for a wide range of opportunities, including universities in Switzerland, Europe, North America, and beyond. The combination of strong academic preparation and multilingual skills can help students keep a broad range of future options open.
A Distinctive Qualification
The Bilingual Diploma demonstrates academic achievement, commitment, and the ability to succeed in more than one language. These skills are increasingly valued by universities and employers in an interconnected world.
