After School English Classes

Helping children ages 5 – 12 build confidence in English through immersion, play, and conversation

Founded in 1961, the International School of Berne (ISBerne) is an English-speaking international school in Gümligen.

Our after school English classes give children the opportunity to hear and use English naturally through games, activities, stories, and conversation in a welcoming and fully immersive environment.

For many families, the experience feels like a small “study abroad” experience — without leaving the Bern region.

English Classes Designed for Young Learners

A young girl in a red shirt raises her hand in a classroom setting with other children blurred in the background.

English 1 for ages 5 - 7

For beginners and children with little or no English experience

This fun and interactive class introduces young learners to English through phonics, songs, games, stories, movement, and simple conversation activities.

Children build confidence step by step while developing foundational speaking, listening, early reading, and writing skills in a playful and supportive environment.

Students also begin reading with the Oxford Reading Tree programme (up to Stage 6), helping them take their first steps toward independent reading in English.

English 2 for ages 8 -12

For children developing confidence in English communication

Designed for children with some prior exposure to English, this class helps students strengthen their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through projects, games, creative activities, and conversation.

Students explore both factual and creative writing while continuing to build vocabulary, reading comprehension, and confidence using English naturally in a supportive and interactive environment.

Lessons include writing activities, phonics review, guided reading, and lateral thinking puzzles. Students read Oxford Reading Tree books up to Stage 15 and also have access to a wide selection of books from the ISBerne Library to encourage reading for pleasure and continued growth in English.
