We are a private full-day school for children ages 3–18, offering new early educational programmes in English and German.

The early years shape a child’s confidence, curiosity, and approach to learning. In the right environment, children feel safe, supported, and encouraged to explore, while their individual strengths are recognised and developed.

For over 65 years, families have chosen the International School of Berne (ISBerne) for our warm school community and high-quality teaching. As a private full-day school, we offer an enriched alternative to other daycare, preschool, Kindergarten, and Primary School options in Bern.

In our early education programmes, learning takes place in English and German. From the very beginning, children build strong foundations, confidence, and skills that support their future learning.

At our school, learning is designed to meet children where they are. Each level of education offers the right balance of structure, support and challenge, accompanying children from early childhood through to Primary School.

Below is an overview of our programmes from preschool to Primary School. Further details can be found on the individual programme pages.

Early Learning Centre

A joyful start to learning from age 3.
 

Our Early Learning Centre offers a high-quality, full-day early education programme. Children develop early literacy, numeracy, communication, and social skills in a structured and supportive learning environment.

Learning takes place in English and German, with both languages integrated naturally throughout the day. Children also take part in a range of enriching activities, including forest learning, art, music, movement, library time, and seasonal skating.

Children may start from age 3 (toilet trained), with enrolment possible throughout the year. Flexible part-time and full-time options are available to meet the needs of families.

Kindergarten

Two teachers. One classroom. Learning in English and German.

Beginning in August 2026, our school will offer a new Kindergarten programme where children learn together in one classroom with two qualified teachers:

• One internationally trained, English-speaking teacher with expertise in the International Baccalaureate (IB)
• One Swiss-trained, German-speaking teacher with expertise in Lehrplan 21

This team-teaching model supports learning in both English and German throughout the day. Children benefit from clear structure, consistent routines, and individual support, helping them develop confidence, independence, and strong social-emotional skills.

Primary School

Preparing confident, capable learners for the future.
 

Our Primary School provides a structured and supportive learning environment where children build strong academic foundations and develop independence, responsibility, and confidence.

Beginning in August 2026, we will offer two curriculum pathways:

• International Pathway
  • Taught in English with German or French as an additional language
  • Guided by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme
  • Focus on inquiry-based learning, critical thinking, and global understanding
     
• Lehrplan 21 Pathway (New)

  • Teaching of the main subjects mathematics, nature, humans, and society (NMG) in German

  • Teaching of physical education, music, and art in English together with the children in the international programme

  • Starting in Grade 1 in August 2026, with the next year group being added each following school year

Across both pathways, students learn in small classes with expert teachers. The programme supports academic progress, social and emotional development, and a smooth transition into the later school years.
 

And Beyond the Primary School...

Our school offers a full range of educational programmes for students up to age 18. These include the Middle Years Programme, Grade 10 Bridging Year, and Diploma Pathways.

For families seeking additional language learning opportunities, we also offer After School English Classes and Summer Camps for children and teenagers.
