International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

At the International School of Berne, we help High School students reach their academic potential while supporting their health and character development. Our college-preparatory program follows our school’s mission“We welcome and connect. We nurture and inspire. We challenge and prepare.”

Our students can choose between two pathways to graduation  – either the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) or the ISBerne Diploma.

Our academic program is enhanced by varied experiential learning opportunities, including participating in the Arts, After School Activities, Sports and Service Learning. In addition, all High School students take part in a yearly Outdoor Education Week and Ski and Skate Fridays. Through these experiences, we strive to encourage our students to develop a positive attitude, a life-long love of learning, and a commitment to both the local and the global community.

The IB Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP), is a two-year diploma program open to students aged 16-19. Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded the prestigious IB Diploma.

The IBDP is structured to enable students to develop into well-rounded adults through integrative, challenging, internationally focussed courses. It provides excellent preparation for future studies and is recognized at universities worldwide.

Students study six subjects, three at higher level and three at standard level providing them with a broad, holistic education. These include:

  • Languages: two
  • Individuals and Societies: one
  • Science: one
  • Mathematics: one
  • Arts: one

The real-life contexts of the Diploma Program help students to further develop their academic skill set, preparing them for university courses, as well as their values and life skills. The program culminates in a two-week examination session at the end of the second year.

This program is based around three core elements work together to help our students become capable, self-aware and international minded people with a strong sense of identity:

Theory of Knowledge (TOK):

Students think about the nature of knowledge and reflect on the process of learning in all their subjects, looking for and understanding the connections between them.

Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS):

Allows students to find and follow their passions, helping them to maintain balance in their lives, care for others, develop their character and undertake challenging projects.

Extended Essay (EE):

Students undertake a piece of academic writing of up to 4000 words. The process will take them through a process called metacognition, where they will learn to understand how and why they make decisions during an academic piece of research.

The ISBerne High School Diploma

The International School of Berne offers a fully accredited U.S. High School Diploma as well as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.  The U.S. High School diploma qualifies graduates for universities in North America as well as some European higher education schools. Less rigorous than the IB Diploma, it is a welcome alternative for many of our students, particularly those planning to study in the United States. ISBerne is also an exam center for both the SAT and PSAT, so students planning to apply to universities in the USA may fulfill this application requirement at our school.

Graduate Destinations

Upon completion of requirements, our graduates receive an ISBerne High School Diploma and, for students who chose the International Baccalaureate Programme, the prestigious IB Diploma (IBDP).

ISBerne Online

We know that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to education. For those who can not attend our school or who desire a flexible schedule to accommodate other activities or needs, ISBerne Online is an excellent solution.

ISBerne Online is an affiliate distance-learning programme which is run separately from the ISBerne campus. Operated by iCademy Middle East using the K12 online curriculum for students in Middle and High School, successful completion of the programme results in the ISBerne Online High School Diploma, accredited by NEASC, and the option to participate in our on-campus graduation ceremony in June.
