Middle | Ages 11-14

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) is the framework we use at the International School of Berne to provide an inclusive and challenging curriculum to students aged 11 to 16. This international curriculum helps students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world. It also creates an essential link between our Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). We ensure that all of our students have the skills and knowledge necessary for thriving academically, whether they continue here, in their home country, or abroad.

 

Classes in our Middle School are held Mondays – Fridays from 8:30 – 15:30, except for Wednesdays when school ends at 14:30. Students then have the option of joining our After School Activities (ASA) programme. They can participate in activities that are not offered within the framework of the curriculum, such as Band, Drama, non-competitive Sports, and much more.

 

Many students at this age chose to use the excellent public transportation system to come to and from school each day with their friends.

At the International School of Berne, we view our classrooms and outdoor areas as spaces to celebrate and encourage learning. Our campus offers a unique opportunity for Middle School students to be situated between the younger children in Primary School and the older teenagers in High School, allowing them to transition into their teenage years without feeling the pressure of growing up too soon.

At the International School of Berne, our dedicated and highly-qualified educators in Grades 6-8 are committed to building relationships with our students and creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Our teachers are experienced in teaching adolescents and hold at least a university degree in Education, with ongoing professional development to enhance their skills.

Our low student-to-teacher ratio ensures that each student receives individual attention and personalized instruction. Additionally, specialist teachers provide expert instruction in Art, Music, and Physical Education, with dedicated learning environments for each subject.

We also have a range of support services available to our students, including a Counsellor, Learning Support Specialist, and English as an Additional Language Specialist. Our curriculum is overseen by a full-time Curriculum Coordinator and the School Director, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging learning experience for all our students.

Our teachers expect and plan for a range of capacities and capabilities, offering varied opportunities for each student to grow, develop their curiosity, and acquire essential skills for research, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management.
