I am Me. I am Special. There is nobody else like me. I come from a special place and I speak a special language in fact sometimes I can speak two or three different languages.
During this last six weeks we have been developing our first unit of inquiry titled "Me, I'm Special". We have been talking about where we come from, the languages that we speak and how we are unique and yet alike in many ways.
"Hello. Hello." We just love to smile and say "Hello." Every day before we play we just love to smile and say "Hello". Saying hello in any language is the first step in getting to know each other a little better and in beginning to understand how we are the same and how we are different. We have enjoyed learning how to say "Hello" in all of our languages.
To celebrate the learning that has taken place during this unit we organised an end of unit celebration called "Week of the Nations". During this week parents came in to talk about their countries and to share with us customs and traditions. We sang songs and played games from America, learned about mendi and bindi from India, danced a special dance from Israel and made a dove of peace. We read a story about a little elephant from Thailand, made waffles and ate them with maple syrup and made crepes and ate them with nutella. We read a story from Kuwait and made a book mark using a pattern of "Buddy the Bear" from Berlin. We learned about the history of the piñata and delighted in trying to break it open with a big stick. When it did break candies and lollipops flew all around the room as the children scampered to collect them. We finished our week with a special Ethiopian coffee ceremony for the parents hosted by Miss Desta followed by an International Lunch where we all sat down together.
Through investigation, exploration and play we have enjoyed learning more about ourselves, other people and the world around us.
