Globi at ISBerne
Do you know Globi? Globi is the most famous Swiss cartoon figure who first appeared in the 1930's. Generations of Swiss grew up with the Globi stories and he is a favourite with young and old. To learn more about Globi please see www.globi.ch.
While living abroad with her family Corinne Aeberhard had noticed that her son's international friends were also fascinated by the Globi books but were not able to understand the German text. Therefore she contacted the Publisher of the Globi books and suggested a translation into English. The Publisher (Globi Verlag) was delighted as they had already been investigating the idea before. As at that time Corinne's son was at ISBerne a fruitful cooperation started. Dr Eric Mace-Tessler, Head of English at ISBerne, and his wife Dr Margret Mace-Tessler took on the quite demanding task of translating the verse, in which Globi is written, into English rhyme.
To make sure that they would not go wrong the book was tested by a group of international children - the multicultural community at ISBerne was the perfect mix. The test showed that also children who did not grow up with Globi knew and liked him. They found him funny, cuddly, resourceful, cheeky and fascinating.
On 2nd September the first Globi book in English ‘Globi's Trip Through Switzerland' was proudly presented to the Swiss press. The event took place at ISBerne promoting not only the book, but also the school with articles in the press throughout Switzerland and prime time in the news of Swiss TV SF 1.
‘Globi's Trip Through Switzerland‘ is the translation of the book ‘Globi‘s abenteuerliche Schweizer Reise‘ which tells the story of Globi travelling through Switzerland by train and how he gets to know the country and its inhabitants. The book may be a guide to Switzerland for tourists, but it is also attractive for all children, both English speakers and those learning English. The book is available in all bookstores throughout Switzerland.
Globi's visit to ISBerne showed that he is also very popular with the international community and everyone was sad to see him leave - see photo gallery below.
